‘Gravel and Wine’ Album Review

Artist: Gin Wigmore
Album: Gravel and Wine
Released: 7 November 2011

Following up her hugely successful debut, ‘Holy Smoke’, Gin Wigmore’s ‘Gravel & Wine’ will splash your face with a whiskey-tinged wave.

The first track, and single ‘Black Sheep’ comes at you with the desire to be a chart-topping hit, with a bit less dependence on mainstream music.

‘Man Like That’, which has been chosen as the second single (which I highly agree with) comes through with a hiss and a roar, and showcases Gins amazing vocals. This is a catchy song talking about a cheating man, with the memorable lyrics ‘Girl you gotta wonder about a man like that’

‘If Only’ which comes through half way through the album slows down the pace, and Gin treats us to her amazing Macy Gray like vocals. It continues the western country music theme, but mainly uses a piano. The strength of the lyrics are reflected by her voice, making this the stand out ballad on the album.

‘Sweet Hell’ makes you feel like you have stepped into a saloon bar in the Wild West, and with the aid of vocals from one of her band members, makes this track even better, and has the potential to be a single in the next few months.

Gravel and Wine demonstrates how much Gin has matured since her last album, by progressing to more mainstream, but still stand out sound.

Other note worthy tracks are Kill of the Night, Devil in Me and Singin’ My Soul.
